James Ewins
James Ewins has been with Hereford Hospital Radio since Autumn 2009. As well as presenting his 'request' shows, he has also previously served on the committee as Fundraising co-ordinator for the station.
It's great fun being part of Hereford Hospital Radio and it's lovely to visit all the wards, to meet lots of new people every week and to take the song requests from everybody.
So you are probably wondering what I get up to when I'm not broadcasting on HHR and you probably want to know a bit more about me in general. Well, I was born in Hereford at the very hospital I now broadcast from on Hospital Radio, (well, it is a new building but in the same place). I'm 27 years 'young' and I live near Hay-on-wye on the Herefordshire/Powys border.
I have an unusual collection of hobbies and interests and probably my biggest hobby is mixing music and composing my own tacks with the help of my computer and synthesiser. I have experimented with a few different styles of music and probably my favourite style to date is Trance, a style which is assumed by many as being very 'dance floor' which it often is but in reality, can also be quite soft and relaxing too.
People sometimes ask me how long it actually takes to prepare for a 2 hour show on Hospital Radio. Well, in reality whilst at home, it can take me several hours to prepare a show for you, the listener. It can involve a lot of research for the quizzes I do, also sound recording, editing and mixing for the song promotion and any other audio related show material.
When I actually arrive at the hospital, I visit all the wards to collect patient requests (my favourite part of preparing for a show) and this can take up to 1 and a half hours. If I'm starting a show at 7pm, I will usually arrive as early as 4pm to arrange a lot of the non request music tracks and to do my studio and sound checks.
When I've done all of that I will usually then go straight around as many wards as I can to collect the requests. I usually aim to collect 12 - 15 requests for a show although this varies depending on how many people are staying in the hospital. Preparing for the show is always a great part of being a Broadcaster on Hereford Hospital Radio and with 2 studios that rival even local and national radio station standards, I can be sure of putting on a show that will be entertaining for everyone.
If you want to listen to me online or if you are staying at the Hospital and want to tune in, please check out the Programmes section of this website to see when I will be Broadcasting and please do get in touch with me during the show to say Hello.
